Storm Damage Inspection

When you are considering whether or not to replace your roof, one of the key questions is – how do you know if your roof needs a storm damage inspection? Many people think that a regular inspection is a mere formality to keep your home safe. However, this is actually quite the opposite. Regular inspections should be done even if there is no reason to suspect a problem because they can catch problems right when they start and keep them from getting worse.

How can you tell if your roof needs a storm damage inspection? In some cases roof damage can be fairly obvious to a homeowner on the surface; however, other times, such as with hail or ice, it may only be identified by an expert who goes on the roof for an inspecting inspection. Schedule an inspection with a licensed roofing contractor with at least five years of experience and a good reputation in storm damage inspections. Also, schedule the inspection before any storms to ensure that the inspection will take place. In most cases, it’s a good idea to have a roof inspection even if there isn’t any obvious damage because leaks can indicate other problems. For example, ice and hail can cause water leaks that aren’t easily spotted.

A leak in your gutters can get the water pressure in your house damaged, which could lead to higher water bills. Leaks under the shingles can also indicate that the roof needs replacing sooner than anticipated. Finally, cracks in the wood framing can indicate that your home is not structurally sound. Once you have scheduled your roofing inspection, check to see if the contractor you have selected to inspect your roof has insurance to replace your roof if needed. If your insurance company isn’t handling the roofing repairs, contact your own homeowner’s insurance agency and ask them if they handle roofing repairs. They should be able to put you in touch with an experienced roofing repair contractor in your area.

You’ll want to also schedule an appointment to have your shingles inspected for wind damage. If you live in an area that experiences significant winds, your shingles might need replacing much sooner than they should in areas where it doesn’t rain that much. Some property owners have opted to pay an independent inspector to come out and do a storm damage inspection on their roof. While this can sometimes be quite inexpensive, most reputable contractors will include the cost of the inspection in their estimate. If the cost of having the inspection done is more than the value of the home, the property owners should probably have it professionally done anyway.

It’s better to spend a few hundred dollars more to prevent several hundred dollars worth of future repairs than to do a poor job and have to spend thousands to repair the damage caused by severe storms. When it comes to repairing damaged roofs, most homeowners would rather see a few thousand dollars worth of preventive measures, rather than to have thousands of dollars worth of roofing replacement later. In the case of hail storms, it’s best to prevent the damage from occurring, than to try and repair it after it has happened. Storm damage granules can easily be cleaned using a granular product designed specifically for this type of repair.
